Heathen Harvest Review of Incantations In Dead Tongues

Here's the latest review of Incantations In Dead Tongues, from Heathen Harvest
This split cdr begins with 5 tracks from Indiana based Harsh Black Noise unit Demonologists. This is around their 10th release. They open with Blood Soaked frequencies which starts with a dark ambient intro that switches into a full out tunnel blasting assault. Variations are made through sirens, feedback and changes in static blast. Corpse Orchard begins with further dark atmospherics which then immediately launch into layered static bursts that combine with dark ambient sounds, further noise and some chant sounds. The symphonic Testimony Submerged In Black; a descending hellish atmospheric falls past a long wall of dense varying static noise. Intense humming drone passes through the Testimony. Subtle passing variations maintain listening interest. All Wounds, No Hope immediately hits blast and gradually builds in intensity through feedback and static. Devouring Glass begins with haunted ambience before a massive explosion of with static and vocalisations within. This is by far the most aggressive noise on from Demonologists.

Demonologists present impressive layered walls of dense noise. Their bursts of noise are also complimented by excellent Black atmospherics, they work excellently here. Deathstench; little info can be found on them, this looks like it may be their first release. Their works are more industrial in sound; they are described as Entropic Black Industrial. Deathstench start with Wivesblood which opens with anguished sounds that move into an industrial death hum that becomes slowly percussive through its’ distortions. Ambient hiss and echo move in, making a landscape of murderous sound. Culling the Formless balances humming intensity and icy atmospherics. The humming repeatedly moves into restrained blasts of static noise and back again. Industrial siren sounds play throughout. Bones of the Aborted starts with a vocal sample before drones sound side by side with static hiss creating a barren ambient soundscape. Transmogrification of the Wyrm Eaten is slowed down to low levels with slowed incoherent vocals and drones. Lurching blasts of sound punctuate the crawl. Putrescence upon the Altar closes Incantations at an equal crawl to that of the previous track, varying dense atmospheres are developed and move things to a faster space. Vocals, feedback and bleeps journey though to noisy levels before things pull right back into creepy soundtrack that gradually slows to an end.

Deathstench use noise throughout their tracks, but not to the full effect that Demonologists do, they allow the industrial/ambient element to breathe and work more. This is a strong debut for Deathstench. Both artists differ yet they also compliment each other well and have both made strong contributions here. Incantations in Dead Tongues is an excellent split of good Black noise and atmospheres. It’s good to hear noise with a black agenda; it clearly draws upon different genres to produce good hybrid forms of sound assault.

Incantations In Dead Tongues Now At Aquarius Records

This split is nearly sold out, and you hate ordering from us...now you can go to Aquarius Records and purchase yourself a copy.

Here's what Existence Establishment had to say about the split:

"Here is a sick split between two artists who I’m unfamiliar with. I always enjoy hearing new stuff that peaks my interest, and there’s nothing like a good dosage of black noise to do so. First off the artwork on here is somehwere inbetween black metal and stoner ink drawings which represent the sounds accurately.

Demonologists kick things off with a mix of wall noise and creepy ambience. With song titles like Corpse Orchard and Blood Soaked Pregnancies this is a dark, soulless sound that barely comes up for air. The formula seems to be working off a searing hot core of brutal noise and adding moving ambience on the fringes of the mix. The sound here reminds me most of Existence Establishment’s own Sistrenatus & BT.HN – Exposing the Ribcage with a nice mix of wall-noise and drone. Demonologist’s formula only goes so far though, as some of the noise starts to wear thin after a while. Although it never becomes bad at any point it does suffer a bit from “vacuum cleaner” fatigue as the hallowing noise drowns out a lot of the more subtle details and can get tiring on the ears. This is about 15% ambience and 85% harsh noise, if they were to switch the percentage around it would be right in my sweet spot.

Deathstench actually does represent the right mix of ambience and noise and [they let] the textures breathe a bit more. Continuing with intense track titles like Wivesblood, Bones of the Aborted, and Putresence Upon the Altar there’s still no respite from the deep pitch black concepts here. The material brings to mind early Gruntsplatter which makes me think how it’s interesting http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifto hear artists kind of re-discovering black noise in this day and age. The production here is lo-fi but in a way that makes the recording feel gritty and weathered, so it’s not held back by this characteristic. Deathstench seems to employ a bed of churning industrial noise with washes of textured sounds piled on top, accompanied by whispering samples to form a thick core of seething industrial noise.

Of the two I enjoy the sounds of Deathstench a little more as I think the ambient qualities of this split are generally stronger than the noisier elements. Either way though, this is definitely a quality release with a consistent vision, great artwork and solid sounds from two lesser known artists. I’ll be keeping one wary eye on everyone involved with this project.

Heathen Harvest Review of Blood Of A Godless Moon:

The riffs on here have a really "mean" quality that I associate with classic thrash acts like early Voivod and Slayer. The second side seems to cultivate more of an old-school thrash direction for Glass Coffin, which works just as well. Lay's riffs are truly memorable and engaging, and the vocals are mysterious and threatening. This record has the feel of predatorial nights spent in the woods, with the ridiculous war shriek at the beginning of "Reflections Of The Moon In My Steel" providing a perfect foil for this image. These riffs go into overdrive with lots of wandering metal, but all of the tracks on here are quality. There is a pretty wide range of different types of Metal presented on these tracks overall. Some of the melodies seem influenced a bit by those of Rudimentary Peni, an unspoken influence on a lot of Black Metal music.

"Invokation Of The Nigh Myst" has a noise/Industrial intro that provides a welcome change of sound. It would be interesting to hear a future release by Glass Coffin that incorporated more of Josh's noise and power electronics influences, as that could really take this project over the top. As it is, Glass Coffin is very effective as an energetic and, at times morose Black Metal project if the rawest variety. It is interesting to see this label going in the direction of releasing more straight-up Black Metal material, but I would be interested to see a bit more of a cross-over as well. The final track, "Cursed" is very nice in this regard in that it finishes things off with a nice and understated piece of dark power electronics with a quiet and subdued ambient sort of sound. Great tape of raw black metal. The last few tracks are the most interesting in terms of doing something a little bit new with the genre, but overall this is a great tape that will certainly please Black Metal fans. Give this unique metal project a listen.
